David R Smith OBE
Chairman – Events Planning
David Smith joined the Lancashire Constabulary as a Police Cadet in 1964. As an Inspector in 1978, he was awarded a Bramshill Scholarship and subsequently gained a 1st Class B.A. Honours Degree in Social Studies at Liverpool University. As Assistant Chief Constable, he was responsible for planning and commanding many complex operations including policing the Open Golf Championships and the security operation for the Labour Party Conference at Blackpool. He retired in 1999, after 35 years service. He then became Regional Home Office Director for the North West, spending the next six years working closely with Local Authorities, the Police and other public and voluntary sector bodies. He was appointed an O.B.E. in the 2005 New Year Honours List.
He has been actively involved with The Prince’s Trust for over 20 years, and from April 2000 until September 2013, was Chairman of the Trust’s Lancashire Committee. Since 2007, he has also been a Director and Vice-Chairman of the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime.
David has long recognised the wide-ranging benefits of the excellent work which The Prince’s Trust does supporting thousands of young people to realise their full potential. He introduced Suzana Sheldon-Edwards to the work of The Prince’s Trust, and has been instrumental in helping to develop the Butterfly Ball Events brand, and now brings all his years of experience to bear as Chair of the Group which does the detailed planning for all the prestigious Butterfly Ball events.
He adopts a simple philosophy of planning meticulously and then doing things with style!
